From Aunt Katie’s Community Garden
“Aunt Katie’s Community Garden is a socially driven food enterprise (501c3) directly serving low-income communities by providing fresh, affordable food and delivering garden-based learning in a marketplace that promotes community wellness. Our focus is community development at the neighborhood level using agri-business as the economic engine. In 2010, Aunt Katie’s Garden became a small boost in our local economy and is continuing to boost long-term sustainability for our community. Our urban farming operation is an apiary and focuses on the production of leafy greens (turnips, collards, swiss chard, cabbage, kale, spinach, and lettuce), okra tomatoes, sweet potatoes, red-skin potatoes, onions, squash, beets, peppers, and approximately 20 different herbs. We conduct informal science classes on composting and food production for children and adults. Our garden’s operation is focused largely on raised beds.”
