Profile
Hornsby Farms, a small family farm located just minutes from downtown Auburn, Alabama, is dedicated to growing over 100 varieties of fruits and vegetables year-round. Their produce is available at farmers markets and local restaurants throughout the state. In addition to fresh produce, Hornsby Farms creates a variety of sweet jams, pepper jellies, and pickled vegetables in their certified commercial canning kitchen located on the farm.
Seasonally, Hornsby Farms delivers affordable baskets of farm-fresh fruits and vegetables to homes in Auburn and Opelika. They also welcome group tours and visitors by appointment, offering a unique opportunity to see the farm operations up close.
Hornsby Farms employs a method called plasticulture. This involves using raised beds covered with plastic, with drip irrigation lines underneath that deliver water directly to the roots of each plant. This technique increases yield, enhances water absorption, reduces weed growth, and minimizes water waste. Between each row, there is ample space for tractors to till the soil and keep weeds at bay.
The farm meticulously prepares for each season by ordering seeds months in advance. Each plant is started from seed and hand-planted into plug trays, which are kept in greenhouses for protection. Once strong enough and the weather permits, the plants are transplanted to the fields. The process involves punching holes in the plastic and placing the plants in the soil, followed by consistent watering and care until harvest.
Every fruit and vegetable at Hornsby Farms is hand-picked by the family and brought to customers through their farm stand, farmers markets, and home delivery services. Experience the freshness and quality of locally grown produce from Hornsby Farms.
