About Cornerstone Gardens: Cornerstone Gardens and Arboretum was created as a place of meditation, rest, and reflection for Carriage House Repose & Restore, Inc., a Christian support ministry for ministers, missionaries, and evangelists. Situated among the historic homes and landscapes of the nationally recognized Oakleigh Garden Historic District, Cornerstone Gardens provides a serene environment for respite. The name is derived from Jesus Christ, referenced by The God of Israel in Isaiah 28:16, symbolizing a foundation of faith.
Features and Attractions:
- British Garden: Enter through the Government Street gate into a formal British Garden filled with all white flowering plants and trees such as Natchez crepe myrtles, Frostproof gardenias, and Autumn Ivory azaleas. This garden is bordered by pathways leading to a large Koi Pond.
- Fragrance Garden: Designed for the visually impaired, this garden features a variety of fragrant plants. Pathways lead to a working greenhouse or the Japanese Woodlands Garden.
- Japanese Woodlands Garden: A secluded garden with a winding pathway, vase fountain pond, Shishi Odoshi bamboo water fountain, and a Lotus pond. It includes two bridges over a dry stream bed and native Japanese plants and trees.
- Blanding V. Drinkard Camellia Garden: Spread throughout the gardens, this area features many camellia cultivars, including C. japonica Walter D. Bellingrath and C. sasanqua Leslie Ann.
- Smaller Gardens: Includes the Nelsie T. Harris Rose Garden, Cliffs’ Shade Garden, a Hemerocallis (daylily) garden, a herb garden, and a sedum garden.
